>>pam: tonight at eight. tracking the storm. rain makes a mess of the holiday get away. on the roadways and at san francisco international airport. the bay area hit hard by the first of back- to- back- to-back stormfronts. and the heaviest rain may still be yet to come. we have live team coverage for you tonight. but first. i'm here in the weather center with jacqueline bennett. who is here to tell us when the next round of rain will roll in. >> jacqueline: we are still seeing showers are run the bay area. and more as we move towards tomorrow are run the bay area. it is going to be wet if you're you are calling to need the

we can see that the radar is above 5,000 ft.. right now, they are about 3,000 ft. showers are actually registering underneath the radar. the wider show is seeing that this is a well organized a system that is going to bring better rainfall organized with a better look at sunday coming up. >> pam: as prevention, is nearly a nightmare at s f o. 100 flights have been

cancelled and is expected to increase. flights were delayed from 1.5 hours, now the wait is even longer. even a stressful for the holiday travelers. j. r. stone. passengers are half to be very patient, j. r.? >> yes. in the last 10 minutes that rainfall has picked back up and that is not good news. i just received with the average wait time is to rush hours. >> it is unacceptable. they are sounding off with two different lines. to a very long lines just to check your lines, it is insane, people waiting.

that the rain was almost to the top of the curb. but, it passing car to wash over the curb and onto the sidewalk. earlier in the day, damage from the friday storm could be seen. christmas decorations were knocked to the ground by windy conditions abd small streams arose as the rain came down. gray skys obscured the sun and traffic was reduced to a slow crawl. busy commuters tried to make it back home for the evening but were delayed some time because of the weather. it's hard to get around when it rains. i know we need the rain but it is hard to get around. despite the difficulty to get around, those in marin managed to do sojust not as quickly as some may have liked. who wants to be rained on? san francisco saw its share of showers throughout the day. this is a live look at the city from the rooftop of our studios on van ness avenue. however, the wet weather didn't slow down holiday shoppers. kron-4's alecia reid continues our live team coverage in san francisco. where shoppers are out and about at this hour. alecia? >>reporter: pam, there are only a few days left before christmas. although it was raining all day if they had to come on out and get their last-minute items. >> the rain did not stop the determined to shoppers but others did not seem to

to take a chance of getting caught in the rainfall. reporting live, the alecia reed, kron 4 news. >> pam: it has been wet and windy in the santa cruz mountains-- with sporadic showers formany drivers along the summit of highway- 17, experienced poor visibility. and the rain and wind also forced drivers to watch their speeds-- especially in the corners on both sides of the summit. the sun popped out from time to time-- with light showers. but if you head back into the mountains, heavy rain is expected to pick up in the area-- along with the winds. and the rain made a mess of the roadways all around the bay on this big holiday travel day.here is a live look at conditions at the bay bridge toll plaza. on the golden gate bridge. and on the san mateo bridge kron-4's charles clifford has been keeping tabs on both traffic and weather in the east bay. he's live in berkeley with the story. charles? >>reporter: right no, i'm a

near interstate-80. you can see traffic is moving decent. the late traffic has cleared up and it is cutting back to normal for freefall has also stuff. it is also light. it is getting back to normal but this has been a long, wet day. >> i left san francisco our road 1:30 heading east and this light rain over the bay bridge. the eastbound highway 24 the road was what the traffic was light at the time. nearly 30 minutes later, there was a multi- car vehicle near the caldecott tunnel that brought traffic to a standstill. it was backed up near 880. the rain was letting up a bit this is time lapse from the east bay hills around 3:00 p.m. this small storm headed northeast over berkeley it has stayed nearly clear when heavy

>> pam: today marks one week since the mass shooting at sandy hook elementary school in new town, connecticut. that community. and in fact, the country. paused to remember the 26-victims. a moment of silence was observed in connecticut. and across the nation. at 9- 30 this morning eastern time. the moment the shootings began. at the state capitol in connecticut. a bell tolled 26-times. traders on the new york stock exchange also honored the victims. and for the first time since the shooting. we are hearing from the national rifle association. kron-4's grant lodes has more on that. >> i call on congress today to act immediately on what is necessary to put armed police officers in every single school in this nation. the only thing that is stopping a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. why is the idea of a

gun of good when it is used to protect the president of our country. or, our police, but that when it is used to protect the children in our schools. >> gun control advocates spoke outthe n-r-a suggested today. that an armed police officer should be placed in every school in the nation. >> this blanket statement is nothing more than a distraction is a delay tactic. it is a destruction of the availability of military assault rifles on the streets, the schools, used at workplaces, shopping malls, movie theaters. >> what are they going to put it on a shopper's tas and oe person on a seye on eight-educator's desk? -- it does not make any sense.

>> the nra said that there would talked to the media next week not taking any questions. grant lodes, kron 4 >> the ad are a, the nra--speag about armed police officers in every schoolwe talked with several bay area school districts. to find out if that idea is none said yes. here is how the west contra costa district responded. >> what does is save about your high school that says you have to officers on your campus. some people that it is good they feel safe. others say that that puts a stereotype for a stigma that they are believed to instinctively to be bad kids. >> pam: the west contra costa school distrct already has armed police officers at its middle and high schools. 20 of them. we're told, paying for these officers comes at a cost. the district says the money usually comes from cutting reading and math

programs. in oakland. the district has armed police officers now on certain campuses that are considered high risk. but that more guns in schools is not the solution. they are more worried about a stray bullet from an outside shooting, than an attack inside the school. the district's spokesperson also added that congress needs to evaluate the matter and start a discussion before making any decisions. a spokesperson for the san francisco unified school district. didn't answer yes or no to the "armed guards" question but said. guote "we continuously work with the san francisco police department and the department of emergency management to prevent and prepare for emergencies. this problem belongs to all

>> new tonight. the ninth circut court of appeals has blocked a california law which bans therapy. that aims to turn gay minors. straight. the three judge panel issued an emergency order to put the law on hold until further arguments can be heard. the law. which governor jerry brown signed effect january first. it would make mental health professionals who engage in efforts to change their clients' sexual orientations subject to discipline by state licensing boards. >> jacqueline: on the rainfall today it has been impacting today with 1.4 tomorrow and sunday. tomorrows system will be overnight and showers lasting overnight. kind of like what we saw today and thursday a bit stronger by -- sunday morning. lasting until about 4. stormtracker 4 radar still showing concord showers and the peninsula and as the north bay. the stormtracker 4 is not picking it up because there radar cannot see what is below 4,000 ft.. the showers right now are below

4,000 ft.. as we make our way for tomorrow. we have moderate rainfall for most of the bay area and snowfall in the sierras. we are going to see quite a bit of snowfall. for the next several days with a winter storm warning in effect and that is when of the main band and cold front is going to press through the bay area. shower reconditions and it is going to last for out the day. shawn wershowery aa light drizzle that we saw today will be very similar tomorrow. as we pause the clock if continue and look at all of that snow. as its may in its way towards sunday, still light showers. but we will see dry conditions until 10:00 a.m.

here is a look at the futurecast. a more moderate rainfall over the north bay and it will start to sack to the south. oakland, concord, sagging.... the rainfall will be entirely through the bay area of but well organized and cold. you are going to see by 9:00 a.m., it will be centered over the south bay but will still see lingering showers over the north bay toward a 11:00 a.m., showers continuing for the afternoon and evening. showers continuing to taper off. as notice, temperatures are not going to be that cold. temperatures in the 40's and daytime's in the 50s. has that daytime storm

>> pam: now for a look at our top stories at eight- thirty. rain having a major impact on holiday travel. at san francisco international. more than 100-flights have been cancelled. and more are expected as more rain moves in. delays are running as long as three hours. just to check bags at some airlines! >> people in the north bay enjoying a bit of a reprieve tonight. but more wet weather is on the way for them. they woke up to howling wind and pounding rain early this morning. flooding is being reported in some parts of marin county. and many people heading out of town for the holidays on the roads couldn't escape wet conditions. the wet weather didn't make the friday getaway any easier. but things are starting to settle down at this hour. more rain however. is on the way. jacqueline bennett is forecast. >> jacqueline: the rain has not even stopped. in some locations at from the bay bridge location and the toll plaza we have been seeing

showers ongoing. multiple showers with nearly three- inches in the santa rosa petaluma, 1-inch and even other totals have been 1/4 in some areas. as we take a look outside the stormtracker 4 showing rainfall and portions of the east bay, oakland. right over the bay bridge toll plaza. still seeing showers and san leandro and pressing off the embarcadero. we will continue to see showers rotating to the peninsula. and the no. 3 the stormtracker 4 is not pinpointing anything because the showers are underneath the radar. unless right now, if it is for of of 4,000 ft. the writer will pick it up otherwise it will not. most of the rainfall right now is under 4,000 ft. and tiny it out on futurecast, coming up. tough luck if you

didn't make it to the post officeas kron four's philippe djegal reports. this was the last day to send your packages out priority mail if you wanted them to arrive by christmas. >>reporter: as closing time drew closer, the line at this post office on geary boulevard in san francisco grew larger. >> i have a good friend in north carolina and it is her birthday and christmas i'm hoping that it will get there by both. >>reporter: the post office announcing friday was the last day that packages sent out priority mail would make it to their destinations by christmas eve. >> we are raising funds for hurricane sandy and mailing them out. one person is in germany so i do not think that it is going to make it but the rest could possibly make it. >>reporter: priority mail usually takes two to three days to arrive. the post office says express mail can be shipped overnight.however, saturday is the last day for express mail to be shipped out in time for christmas. plus, it's more expensive. >> i do not think that they are going to make it their on-time record >> i am a bit of a

procrastinator. the bfi sent it priority >>reporter: mailreportersome boxes heading out of state. others being mailed out to friends and family here in the bay area. before cut off so people are able to receive them. >>reporter: in san francisco, philippe djegal, kron four news. >> pam: police now say, the deadly home invasion -- that rocked a wealthy silicon valley suburb -- was *not random. raven dixon was arraigned in a santa clara court today, on charges of being an accessory to the murder of former winery ower raveesh kumar kumra. this all happened durung a home invasion -- back on november 30th. dixon was led out of the san jose courtroom in chains, after the judge put her bail at one -million dollars. a pre- trial hearing is set for the middle of january. >> a man who died after being stabbed during a graduation party-- marks san jose's 45th homicide of the year. the death adds to a

homicide tally which is higher than last year's total of 40 homicides. the victim was found just before 3 a-m -- suffering from at least one stab wound. he was taken to the hospital, where he died just after 3:30. no suspects have been identified. and police do not believe the killing was gang- related. >> also in san jose. robert saunders elementary school was locked down for about two hours today. after a pair of robbery suspects retrieved a gun from the backyard of a nearby home. a few blocks away, police surrounded the home the suspects were thought to be in.quite possibly armed with a gun. after a brief standoff, the suspects surrendered.officials didn't want to take any chances with a school so close. but by 10:30 a-m, announced that all was clear in the elementary school. after a meeting today with >> party leaders. president obama called on congress to solution. to avoid some end- of- the year tax hikes. due to the fiscal cliff. >> in the next few days i've asked leaders of congress to work towards a package that prevents a tax hike on middle class

>> pam: now for today's market update. as anticipated. stocks took a nose dive after house republicans called off a vote on raising taxes on the wealthy last night. on wall street. the dow closed the day down 120 points. it had lost as much as 189 at one point. the nasdaq dropped 29-points. and the s-and-p 500 fell 13.

>> the commerce department says americans earned more, spent more, and saved more in november. a new report says personal income rose six-tenths of a percent. and spending jumped point-four-percent. the commerce department adds, the savings rate nudged up to 3-point-6- percent, from october's 3- point-4-percent. the encouraging news is partly due to hurricane sandy, which brought down income and spending levels in october. despite that, the numbers are even higher than economists had forecasted. >> jacqueline: we are continuing to see delays at s f o. nearly over three hours! because of that a low visibility associated it. this system will press through and more delays expected at sfo. check with your carrier to make sure. the rainfall moving in overnight will last throughout the day sunday. this pattern that we are seeing are more storms and continuing rainfall. as reticulated the satellite and radar continue to see rainfall with light rain but heavier rainfall as we take this wider view. this is approaching northern california bringing heavy rainfall through your regatta. it will press south, overnight. let us take a look at futurecast.

through santa rosa, and by 3:00 a.m.-5:00 a.m., moderate through the north bay. the notice, this is more organized and the storm, today. moderate rainfall but by 9:00, it will be south of the golden gate with residual showers throughout the day. and a 11:00, continued all to the bay area. that will give the case until to and through the evening finally tapering off towards the later evening hours. quite a bit of rain fall through the sierras. and that went into effect with heavy snowfall expected. several feet of accumulated snowfall by monday. one-2 ft. to the higher elevations. taking a
